An introductory overview of the company

The Yemen Gas Company (YGC) is a government-owned company established in 1993. It was initially known as the General Gas Corporation and was re-registered and restructured in 1996 under its current name, the Yemen Gas Company (YGC). This restructuring was done to comply with the provisions of production sharing agreements in the oil and gas sector and to support gas development agreements. The primary objective of the company is to meet and supply the Yemeni market’s gas needs and export gas abroad, as well as to enhance gas investments in Yemen and contribute to industrial development and economic growth. The activities of the Yemen Gas Company cover all stages of petroleum/natural gas production, ranging from exploration and transportation to production and marketing, meeting the increasing demand for gas in the local and international markets.

The Yemen Gas Company plays a crucial and strategic role in the government’s efforts to diversify the country’s economic resources by attracting international investment companies in exploration, production, and export, and encouraging national capital to invest in infrastructure projects in the areas of transportation, storage, packaging, and distribution.

Since its establishment, the Yemen Gas Company (YGC) has shouldered the responsibility of developing strategic plans, policies, and plans to successfully achieve the set objectives in line with the comprehensive development path witnessed in our country under the wise leadership that has turned strategies, policies, plans, and projects into reality.

With the launch of the Yemen LNG project, with a budget of nearly $5 billion and gas reserves dedicated to the project reaching 9.15 trillion cubic feet, of which approximately 1 trillion cubic feet is allocated to meet the needs of the local market, the gas project becomes the largest industrial investment project ever in the Republic of Yemen. It is one of the major investment projects and the first of its kind in terms of partnership between the private and public sectors in Yemen, in partnership with several international companies under the framework of Yemen LNG. The commercial phase of the project was inaugurated in November 2009, marking a new and significant stage of cooperation between the Yemeni government and the participating partners.

The company is the third-largest shareholder in the LNG project, with a contribution rate of up to 16.73 %. The project consists of several facilities for the production, processing, and liquefaction of LNG. This includes the construction of a 25 km, 20-inch pipeline connecting the existing gas production and processing units in the gas fields in Sector 18 in Marib Governorate. It also involves the construction of a 320 km, 38-inch main pipeline connecting the gas production and processing units in Marib to the gas liquefaction plant in the Balhaf area in Shabwa. Moreover, a branch pipeline is constructed to transport gas allocated for domestic consumption to the Ma’bar city in central Yemen. The export was launched in November 2009, with the liquefied natural gas being marketed to the American and Asian markets based on the LNG sale agreements in 2005 with companies such as Kogas (2 million tons), Suez (2.5 million tons), and Total (2 million tons).
